Itikāf is a spiritual practice observed whereby you seclude yourself in the Masjid or designated area for a certain period of time. During Itikāf, the main purpose is to solely focus on worship and contemplation, disconnecting from the worldly distractions. The practice of Itikāf has been highly regarded in Islām and is believed to bring numerous spiritual benefits.
The Qur'ān mentions Itikāf in Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 187, where Allāh says, "And do not have sexual relations with them [your wives] while you are staying for worship in the Masjids." This verse refers to Itikāf and the importance of devoting oneself entirely to worship during this time.
The Prophet ﷺ also practiced Itikāf and encouraged his followers to do so. In a hadith narrated by Aisha (may Allāh be pleased with her), she said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to observe Itikāf in the last ten days of Ramaḍān until Allāh the Mighty and Majestic took his soul, and then his wives observed Itikāf after him." (Sahih Bukhari)
The last ten days of Ramaḍān are considered the best time to observe Itikāf as it was during these days that the Prophet ﷺ used to do so. It is believed that during these days, the rewards for good deeds are multiplied, and the chances of attaining forgiveness and mercy from Allāh are increased.
Observing Itikāf during Ramaḍān also provides an opportunity to increase one's spiritual connection with Allāh and focus on self-improvement. By disconnecting from worldly distractions and focusing solely on worship, individuals can attain a deeper level of devotion and inner peace.
Apart from Ramaḍān, Itikāf can be observed at any time of the year, and the duration can vary depending on one's personal circumstances. It is recommended to seek the guidance of a qualified Islāmic scholar before embarking on this spiritual practice.
In conclusion, Itikāf is a highly regarded spiritual practice in Islām with numerous benefits. By disconnecting from worldly distractions and focusing solely on worship, individuals can attain a deeper level of devotion and inner peace. The last ten days of Ramaḍān are considered the best time to observe Itikāf, and it is recommended to seek the guidance of a qualified Islāmic scholar before embarking on this spiritual practice.
