Pornography and Masturbation: Guarding One’s Modesty

In an age where access to explicit content is widespread, preserving one’s modesty and purity has become increasingly challenging. Islām emphasises self-discipline and encourages believers to guard their eyes and desires. Allāh ﷻ states in the Qur’ān:

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ
"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity..."
(Surah An-Nūr 24:30)

This verse reminds Muslims to be mindful of their actions, as looking at inappropriate material can lead to spiritual and moral corruption. Protecting one’s chastity is not merely a physical act but an essential part of maintaining purity of the heart and soul.

Scholars unanimously agree that indulging in pornography is impermissible in Islām due to its harmful effects on the individual and society. It fosters addiction, distorts one’s perception of relationships, and weakens one’s connection with Allāh. The Prophet ﷺ warned about the dangers of fulfilling desires unlawfully, stating:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ عَلَى ابْنِ آدَمَ حَظَّهُ مِنَ الزِّنَا، فَهُوَ مُدْرِكُ ذَٰلِكَ لَا مَحَالَةَ
"Indeed, Allāh has written for the son of Ādam his share of fornication, which he will inevitably commit..."
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Although masturbation is a debated topic among scholars, many consider it impermissible unless it is to prevent falling into a greater sin. Even then, it is discouraged, as it fosters unhealthy habits and weakens willpower. The focus should be on self-control and seeking lawful means of fulfilment, such as marriage, as the Prophet ﷺ advised:

يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمُ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ
"O young men, whoever among you can afford to marry should do so..."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhāri)

To combat these struggles, Muslims should increase their taqwā (God-consciousness), engage in acts of worship, and seek refuge in Allāh. Fasting is an effective way to suppress desires, as the Prophet ﷺ recommended for those unable to marry. Additionally, avoiding triggers, seeking good company, and keeping busy with beneficial activities are practical steps towards breaking these habits. True contentment lies in obeying Allāh, and every effort made for His sake is a step closer to spiritual success.
