The blessed month of Dhū ’l-Ḥijjah is a period filled with opportunities for spiritual elevation and devotion to Allāh. Among the highly recommended acts of worship during this time is the recitation of Takbīrāt al-Tashrīq, a declaration of Allāh’s greatness. This phrase is recited after every farḍ (obligatory) ṣalāh from the 9th to the 13th of Dhū ’l-Ḥijjah. It is an act of glorification that brings immense reward and reminds the believers of the significance of these sacred days.
Allāh commands His servants to remember Him abundantly, especially during the days of Hajj:
وَٱذْكُرُوا ٱللَّهَ فِىٓ أَيَّامٍۢ مَّعْدُودَٰتٍۢ
"And remember Allāh during the appointed days."
(Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:203)
The Takbīrāt al-Tashrīq is recited as follows: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحَمْدُ
"Allāh is the Greatest, Allāh is the Greatest. There is no god but Allāh, and Allāh is the Greatest, Allāh is the Greatest, and to Allāh belongs all praise."
This takbīr commemorates the greatness of Allāh, particularly in relation to the rituals of Hajj and the sacrifice of Qurbānī. It was an established practice of the Ṣaḥābah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhum) and has continued throughout generations. The takbīr is a unifying chant that resonates in masājid, homes, and public gatherings, reinforcing the remembrance of Allāh and fostering a sense of community among Muslims.
The obligation of reciting Takbīrāt al-Tashrīq applies to both men and women, whether they are praying in congregation or individually. Men are encouraged to recite it loudly, while women may recite it softly. It is a sunnah mu’akkadah (emphasised Sunnah), ensuring that believers maintain their connection to Allāh through the continuous glorification of His name.
As the days of Dhū ’l-Ḥijjah are filled with opportunities for worship, reciting Takbīrāt al-Tashrīq is a simple yet profound act that should not be neglected. Whether one is performing Hajj or residing in another part of the world, engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allāh) during these sacred days magnifies the essence of Islām and strengthens one’s īmān. It serves as a reminder of submission, gratitude, and the unshakable belief in the oneness of Allāh.
